Celebrating 25 Years of Success with Exciting News!

Our students’ educational experience is at the heart of every decision we make at King-Chavez Neighborhood of Schools. That’s one of many reasons we're proud to share some exciting upcoming changes to our school community!

Blue School and Preparatory Academy
As many of you know, we have already merged Primary and Arts & Athletics Academies. Starting in the 2025-26 school year, King-Chavez Preparatory Academy will move to the Blue School and become part of a united campus serving grades TK-8! Thanks to community input, we are excited to share that we have an official new name for the Blue School campus–King-Chavez Community Academy – serving grades TK-8! A TK-8 campus will create a more cohesive learning environment for our students, while also providing families who have multiple KC students the convenience of a single enrollment and pick-up/drop off location. We're thrilled that Gerry Guevara will be Principal for the combined schools!

High School
Additionally, we're proud to announce that King-Chavez Community High School will move to the Preparatory building in 2025, located at 500 30th St, San Diego, CA 92102. Moving the high school back into our neighborhood will reduce commuting times for our students. They will be able to walk to school and they will also have access to our turf field, track, basketball courts and auditorium.

Academy of Excellence
The campus remodel is progressing and will be complete next year! Students will enjoy updated facilities while maintaining the small-school environment that makes KC so special. The campus will include a new two-story school building, track, field, and outdoor play areas.

This is a significant moment in King-Chavez’s history that will reshape our schools in a positive way for our children and future generations! We're deeply grateful to be embarking on this journey with all of you.

Our Dual Language Approach

Unlocking the Power of Bilingualism at King-Chavez Neighborhood of Schools

Learning multiple languages isn’t just a skill—it’s a gateway to sharper memory, stronger focus, better problem-solving, and enhanced multitasking. Beyond academics, it fosters empathy, cultural appreciation, and confidence, preparing our students to thrive in an interconnected world.

That’s why, since 2019, King-Chavez Neighborhood of Schools has proudly offered our Dual Language Program. All TK-5th grade students at Community Academy and all TK-4th grade students at Academy of Excellence spend half their day immersed in Spanish and the other half in English, developing fluency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in both languages. The Dual Language Program will expand to 5th graders at Academy of Excellence during the 2026-2027 school year. All middle school and high school students continue their language journey with dedicated Spanish classes. Teachers tailor instruction to each student’s pace, ensuring everyone grasps concepts fully and progresses confidently. We also provide extra support for students whose first language isn’t English, helping them achieve proficiency and earn ELPAC Reclassification.

Our ultimate goal? For every student to graduate with the California State Seal of Biliteracy—an achievement that opens doors to colleges and careers, celebrating their hard-earned bilingual skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will learning two languages confuse my child or slow down their academic progress?
Absolutely not! Research shows that learning in two languages does not confuse students or hold back their academic growth. In fact, it often enhances cognitive skills and learning overall.

What if no one at home speaks Spanish—will that be a problem?
Not at all! It’s important to support your child’s language development in the language spoken at home. Studies show that strong skills in a child’s first language actually help them learn additional languages more easily.

How long does it take for a child to become fluent in a second language?
Becoming fluent usually takes between 5 and 10 years, depending on exposure and practice, but every child’s journey is unique.
